1st N.J. Yasaswy Virtual National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition, 2021 held in The ICFAI Law School Dehradun

Dehradun: The ICFAI Law School, The ICFAI University Dehradun in Academic collaboration with Gorkela Law Office, AOR, Supreme Court of India and Manupatra organised the 1st N.J. Yasaswy Virtual National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition, 2021.A total of 42 teams from all over India participated in the event. The moot focused on the issue of Environmental Lawrelated to Clean Ganga Action Plan with ancillary issues of Right to Cremation in the context of Burial Rights.

The competition commenced with the inaugural session on 3rd September 2021. Prof. Dr. Haragopal Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, The ICFAI University Dehradun, Brig. Rajiv Sethi, Registrar, The ICFAI University, Dehradun, Mrs. Monica KharolaAssistant Dean, ICFAI Law School graced the occasion alongside the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Justice Govind Mathur, Former Chief Justice, Allahabad High Court, Guest of Honour Prof. Dr. A V Narsimha Rao, Director IFHE and Prof. Dr. Yugal Kishore, Former Dean, ICFAI Law School. While welcoming the participants and guests during the inaugural ceremony, Prof Reddy and Prof Rao spoke about importance of mooting for budding lawyers. He said, “Moot Court Competitions provide students of law an opportunity to test their skills for professional competence.”

Fourty Two teams fought amongst each and other in the Preliminary Rounds out of which eight teams made it to the Quarter Finals and then the Top four Teams made it to the Semi Finals. The Semi Finalits wereSymbiosis Law School, HyderabadKrishtu Jayanti College of LawCentral University of South Bihar and Department of PG Studies and Research In Law, Rani DurgavatiVishwavidyala, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

The three day long1st N.J. Yasaswy Virtual National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition, 2021 on 5th September 2021 in Association with Gorkela Law Office (AOR), Supreme Court of India, Manupatra& E-Justice India, 3rd September to 5th September, 2021 concluded today after a stellar final round between Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad and Krishtu JayantiCollege of Law was judged by eminent legal luminaries and Environmental Law experts including Hon’ble Justice V K Shukla, Former Judge, Allahabad High Court, Advocate on Record Mr. Sameer Shrivastava & Dy. Advocate General Mr. Manoj Gorkela.

The final rounds were followed by a grand valedictory ceremony which was graced by Hon’ble Justice Mr Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta, Former Chief Justice, Undivided Andhra Pradesh High Court as the Chief Guest, Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde, Supreme Court of India and Dy. Advocate General Mr. Manoj Gorkela. Hon’ble Justice Mr Kalyan Jyoti Senguptastressed on importance of making the right to clean environment as explicity mentioned fundamental right under the Constitution of India and gave a deeper nuance into the role of judiciary in protecting people’s right to health in the context of a pandemic.

Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad was felicitated as the WinnersKrishtu Jayanti College of Law as Runners Up and Central University of South Bihar as the 2nd Runners up. The Best Speaker was awarded to Mr. Rupam Banerjee, Noida International UniversityBest Researcher was awarded to Mr. Ayush TiwariDepartment OfPg Studies And Research In Law, Rani DurgavatiVishwavidyala, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh and the Best Memorial was awarded to University Of North Bengal, Department Of Law.

Prof. Dr. Haragopal Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, The ICFAI University Dehradun and Brig. Rajiv Sethi, Registrar, The ICFAI University, Dehradun committed to make the Environmental Law moot an annual event at The ICFAI University Dehradun and praised the Organizing Faculty Convenor Ms. Anushmi Jain and Mr. Vishal Bera for meticulously conducting the moot on grandiose scale by hosting 42 teams from across the length and breadth of the country.
